What do all Mediterranean countries have in common? A savoury and healthy art of
cooking based on the natural products grown on their respective soils. These varied dishes
are inevitably livened up by a dash of olive oil, garlic and a selection of local herbs. Beyond
these common values, each region cultivates its own particular differences. Kawan takes you to the shores of the sea on a savoury gourmet route, with an
occasional stop at some of the best restaurants amongst the network’s campsites of
southern Europe.
El Astral - Spain
The campsite El Estral, positioned between Valladolid and
Salamanca, houses a small restaurant serving traditional
Castellan cooking. Amongst the most popular savoury
dishes are Turresilano Chicken (a local recipe for 4 persons
dating back to the era before the discovery of America),
“Mama Isi” Cod (a recipe provided by the mother-in-law
of the site owner) and the tasty “Clara’s Fish Soup”. The
latter is named after the Chef, thus an original dish wellappreciated
by El Estral’s foreign guests. Garlic Rabbit and
Pork à l’Orange are also on the menu. For a minimum of
2 persons, it is possible to order the traditional “Paella”.
A regional wine is the perfect accompaniment to any of
these delightful concoctions.
The restaurant is open at noon and in the evening from 1
April to 1 October; at lunchtime you may also choose the
day’s menu.
Florenz
Florenz offers an elegant setting, as well as an original imaginative menu displayed by the variety of
savoury eel-based dishes, such as wrapped eel, an eel liver salad, an eel gratin and an astonishing fish
sausage in which the eel’s skin serves as the sausage wrap. If eel does not suit your fancy don’t worry,
as there are also numerous salads and the more classical dishes awaiting you, in which the local
produce is ever present.
